 Counselling Experience

I have over 20 years experience as a therapist and counselling tutor.

  • I have experience of working within the primary care sector, offering short term, solution focused therapy to patients at GP centres.

  • This work provided me with valuable insight into the range of issues that people approach their GP's for - usually when they feel they've reached crisis point.  The opportunity to provide the  desperately sought therapeutic intervention for individuals at this significant point in their lives was hugely rewarding.

  • In this work I gained the essential skills of providing short term solution focused therapy to apply to a range of common presenting symptoms. This helped to reduce the pressure on GP waiting lists as patients seeking mental health support were able to more readily access it.

  • I also worked for a children's charity offering counselling to children in schools.  This was an invaluable experience as is provided me with the opportunity to sit alongside children whilst they expressed their fears, frustrations and confusion about events in their life they had no control over.  What I came to realise from this work is that these are the issues that children carry into their adult lives, if they don't have the opportunity and safe space to be heard.

Our early unmet needs as children remain our unmet needs as adults...

Tutoring experience:

  • My tutoring work enables me to keep the theoretical concepts fresh in my mind as well as discussing, debating and exploring with students the latest research on topical issues and how they relate to the counselling work.

  • I currently teach on counselling diplomas as the core tutor, supporting students in their knowledge and application of counselling skills and theory.  I liaise with  counselling agencies to support and manage the student's as they navigate their way through their placements to gain the invaluable experience of working with clients.

  • I have also established The Counselling School, offering CPD and training in Couples & Relationship Counselling to counselling practitioners.

  • Regular workshops are delivered to enhance the ongoing need for personal and professional development for trainee and qualified counsellors.  The workshops in highest have been on the subjects of Sex and Shame.  Unsurprisingly this is also the very heart of the  work that presents in my practice.

  • In line with ethical requirements, I regularly undertake CPD to keep up to date with latest developments and research.
